The Epiphany of the Lord

The Gist of Matthew 2:1-12

In the Gospel reading (Matthew 2:1-12) for the Epiphany of the Lord, three Magi from the East follow a star to Jerusalem, seeking the newborn King of the Jews. King Herod, troubled by this news, consults with the chief priests and scribes who identify Bethlehem as the prophesied birthplace. The Magi continue their journey, find Jesus in Bethlehem, and offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, ultimately avoiding Herod on their return journey as they are warned in a dream.

Online Stars and Distractions

Just as the Magi sought something greater, we too navigate our digital landscapes searching for meaning. In the digital realm, various “stars” compete for our attention – social media, games, and trends. However, not all lead to fulfillment. Reflect on what digital stars you follow. Are they distractions or do they guide you towards positive and meaningful experiences?

The Magi made a wise choice to seek the newborn King. Similarly, make wise choices in your digital kingdom. Choose content that aligns with Christian values, uplifts others, and contributes positively to your online community. Be intentional about the impact you make in the digital space.

Offering Your Digital Gifts

The Magi brought gifts to honor the newborn King. Consider what “gifts” you can offer in your online interactions. Whether it’s kindness, encouragement, or sharing your talents, let your digital presence be a positive contribution to the virtual world.

Just as the Magi found purpose by following the star, you can find meaning in your digital journey. Choose your digital stars wisely, make wise choices in the online kingdom, and offer your digital gifts with intention. In the vastness of the internet, let your light shine brightly, guided by purpose and faith. Follow the star, and may your online journey be filled with fulfillment, connection, and positive impact.

The Magi did not set out because they had seen the star, but they saw the star because they had already set out.

St. John Paul II

A Story To Deepen Insight

In a small village, there lived a young boy named Mark. His family struggled with poverty, and their humble home barely provided enough to survive. One day, as Mark wandered the streets with hunger gnawing at his stomach, a kind-hearted stranger, a wealthy merchant passing through, noticed the thin, weary boy.

The merchant approached Mark with a bag of freshly baked bread and some fruits, a gesture of kindness from the abundance he carried. Mark, grateful yet selfless, looked at the stranger and said, “Thank you, sir, but my little sister is sicker than I am. She’s alone on the streets. Could I take this food to her instead?”

Touched by Mark’s concern for his sister, the stranger agreed. Mark carefully carried the bag through narrow alleys until he reached a dimly lit corner where his sister, Emily, shivered under a thin blanket. Her eyes lit up when she saw Mark approaching.

Without a word, Mark handed her the bag of food. Emily, weak but grateful, managed a smile. Mark watched as his sister ate, his own hunger momentarily forgotten. The stranger, who had discreetly followed Mark, witnessed this act of selflessness and was deeply moved.

Later that evening, as the merchant prepared to leave the village, he sought out Mark’s family. Overwhelmed by the boy’s compassion, he offered them not only food but also resources to improve their living conditions. Mark’s selfless act had not only ensured his sister’s well-being but had also brought unexpected blessings to his entire family.

True Wealth

The moral of the story is clear: generosity and kindness, even in the midst of one’s own struggles, have the power to transform lives. Mark’s decision to prioritize his sister’s needs over his own demonstrated the profound impact of selfless acts. It reminds us that true wealth lies not in material possessions but in the compassion we show to others, especially in moments when we have little to give.
