Let My Tongue Be Silenced, If I Ever Forget You!

What does it mean to remember God and His promises? Psalm 137 is a lament of the exiled Israelites who were taunted by their Babylonian captors to sing the songs of Zion. The psalmist expresses his deep sorrow and longing for Jerusalem, the city of God, and vows never to forget it or forsake it. He also calls for God’s justice and vengeance on the enemies who destroyed Jerusalem and mocked God’s people. He ends with a shocking curse on the Babylonians, wishing them the same fate they inflicted on the Israelites.

This psalm challenges us to reflect on our own relationship with God and His covenant. Do we cherish His presence and His word as the source of our joy and hope? Do we trust in His faithfulness and His power to deliver us from our troubles? Do we seek His righteousness and His glory, even when we face opposition and persecution? Or do we forget Him and His promises, and compromise with the world and its values?

Let us remember that God has not abandoned us, but has redeemed us through His Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again to give us eternal life. Let us also remember that God will judge the wicked and reward the righteous, and that He will make all things new in His kingdom. Let us cling to Him and His word, and sing His praises, even in the midst of our trials and tribulations.

Remember that God is faithful and He will never forget us or forsake us.

Ask Yourself

How can I show my love and loyalty to God and His people today?

Let Us Pray

Lord, You are our refuge and our strength, our salvation and our song. Help us to remember You and Your promises, and to honor You and Your name. Forgive us for the times we have forgotten You or forsaken You, and restore us to Your grace. Protect us from the evil one and his schemes, and deliver us from all our enemies. Bless Your people and Your church, and bring Your kingdom and Your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
